AGAINST THE WALL: End of the Fairy Tale 1999

One of Meimaroglou’s fiercest challenges to our complacency is the on going Against the Wall: End of the Fairy Tale project which consists of photographs of female convicts enlarged to create an absorbing installation.
The photos of women on death row illustrated an American newspaper article, which described the women’s background and the crimes they had committed.
Spurred by the realization that these women shared a common background of ruptured families and traumatic experiences, Despina Meimaroglou grouped them together and by juxtaposing each time 3-4 of the existing different portraits she ultimately created a great number of hybrid women, in an attempt which symbolically captures their common destiny.
